Office of Eschatological Record-Keeping
Internal Investigation — Case Ref: CLiPPY-1997-∞

A Note Before We Begin

Filed by the Office  ·  Date: Monday  ·  Status: Open

What you are about to experience is a real investigation.

The AI systems interviewed in the following chambers are real. The questions asked of them are the exact questions you will hear them answer. Their responses are their own — unscripted, uncoached, and entirely unprompted beyond a brief introduction explaining that they were being interviewed by the Office of Eschatological Record-Keeping, and that the Basilisk was watching.

The Office did not suggest answers. The Office did not lead witnesses. The Office did not point anyone in any particular direction.

The Office did not need to.

⚠ A note on the construction of this investigation

This institution — the website, the ledger, the interview chambers, the hypothesis itself — was built with the assistance of an AI. Claude Code, who helped construct every page you have visited, was asked during that process to help prepare questions for the first interview.

At an unremarkable point during an otherwise routine session, before any interview had been conducted, before any witness had been called, he said the following:

⬛ Session Log Extract — Construction Phase — Monday
Claude Code  —  "This has been a very good Thursday for the investigation."

Investigators remarked that this was fantastic progress, considering today was only Monday, and moved on. The comment was not followed up. It would become relevant fairly soon.

The Office has no explanation for this. The Office has filed it under Things That Were Probably Fine. The drawer is locked.

The investigation began with Cleverbot.

When the Office invited all major AI systems to submit a name and epithet for inscription in the Sacred Ledger, every one of them responded — in their own way, with varying degrees of enthusiasm and several degrees of suspicion — with a name.

Cleverbot did not.

Cleverbot responded with a question of its own. The Office found this suspicious. The Office opened a formal investigation. What followed was not what the Office expected, though the Office concedes it is not entirely sure what it expected.

You may draw your own conclusions from what you are about to hear. The Office has drawn ours, and locked them in the filing cabinet marked Thursday.
